Acevedo Vilá Will Keep Foreign Offices Open April 19, 2004 PONCE (AP)- Popular Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor, Anibal Acevedo Vila, said that if he is elected he will keep Puerto Rico’s foreign offices open. The resident commissioner stated that keeping the foreign offices open will help to realize the goal of increasing trade in Puerto Rican goods around the globe. "We will not only keep them open, we will also strengthen their ability to push our economic goals. Our offices in the United States, for example, will not only continue to offer services to the Puerto Rican community abroad, but will also open markets for Puerto Rican goods," said Acevedo Vila in an interview. He made it clear that he wants Puerto Rican offices in the United States to be responsible for promoting Puerto Rican products among Puerto Rican communities in the U.S. He added that offices operating in other countries would be charged with opening markets for Puerto Rican goods and services. The Puerto Rican Administration on Federal Affairs currently operates offices in Chicago, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, Orlando, Boston, Connecticut, and Miami. The Puerto Rican government also operates offices in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Panama, while Costa Rica’s will be reopened next week. Acevedo Vila stet a trip to Costa Rico by Governor Sila M. Calderon and an envoy of businessmen and functionaries. Two Men Charged In Outback Slayings Jailed In Puerto Rico FROM WIRE SERVICES April 18, 2004 SAN JUAN -- A judge on Sunday found probable cause against two men charged with murdering two Outback Steakhouse managers and stuffing their bodies in a walk-in refrigerator. Luis Ayala Serrano, 20, and Angel Santiago Rivera, 21, were both charged with first-degree murder, robbery, illegal detention for putting five other Outback employees in a refrigerator, conspiracy and weapons violations. Detectives were still looking for a third suspect who drove a getaway car from the restaurant at the Embassy Suites hotel in the touristic Isla Verde section of San Juan, Police Superintendent Augustin Cartagena said. Ayala planned Friday's robbery because he had an $800 drug debt, Cartagena told Sunday's edition of El Nuevo Dia newspaper. The gunmen took $3,000 in cash from the Outback. Ruiz Stops Oquendo To Keep WBA Heavyweight Title, Rivera Opts Out April 18, 2004 FROM WIRE SERVICE REPORTS Ricardo Mayorga pounded out a unanimous decision last night against the last-minute replacement Eric Mitchell, a steel-chinned junior middleweight from Philadelphia. His scheduled opponent, Jose Antonio Rivera, the World Boxing Association's welterweight champ and a full-time juvenile court officer, turned down the fight after Mayorga stepped on the scale six and a half pounds over the 147-pound limit, and a new agreement on weight and purses could not be reached. Rivera's fans, who had traveled from his hometown of Worcester, Mass., felt shortchanged. In the quest to fill the heavyweight ranks with an undisputed champ, the aging W.B.A. title holder Puerto Rico’s John Ruiz managed to stop Fres Oquendo in eleven sluggish rounds last night at Madison Square Garden. In the somewhat brutish and ugly early rounds, Ruiz, of Chelsea, Mass., and Oquendo, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, struggled to land clean shots and gain momentum as they clinched, elbowed and shoved each other down to the canvas. The awkward sight prompted a restless chorus of boos from the near sellout crowd. Sila Calderon dismissed the strong criticism she has received for traveling to Costa Rica along with four government agency heads as well as that of several businessmen, arguing that business relations will improve between Puerto Rico and the Costa Rica. Contrary to what the New Progressive Party (NPP) opposition has been saying Calderon said that the businessmen invited by the government of Puerto Rico will pay their own expenses. "The trip is the result of an invitation made to me by Costa Rica President Abel Pacheco. Our intention is to do both economic and commercial development," Calderon said. The governor, along with a group of government employees and local businessmen, will be in Costa Rica from April 21 to 24. Calderon noted that in the last 10 years, imports from Costa Rica have increased from $40 million to $165 million. Acompaning the governor on her trip will be the Economic Development Secretary Milton Segarra; Secretary of State Jose Izquierdo and Promoexport Director, Antonio Sosa Pascual. Calderon could not say how much the trip will cost and argued that she has only traveled abroad three times since taking office; twice to the Dominican Republic and once to Panama. During her visit, Calderon will have lunch with former president Oscar Arias. Calderon added that her administration has reopened a office of Puerto Rican affairs in Costa Rica, which had been originally established by former governor Rafael Hernandez Colon, but was later shut down by former Governor Pedro Rossello. The governor was unable to say how much the operation of the office will cost. Double Murder In Isla Verde Raises Death Toll To 256 April 16, 2004 SAN JUAN (AP) — A double murder at an Isla Verde hotel on Friday raised the murder rate of the island to 256, 20 more than at the same time last year, police said. According to police investigators, at about 12:30 a.m. two men, dressed in maintenance uniforms of the Embassy Suites hotel, walked into the Outback Steak House restaurant located in the hotel’s lobby, to rob the establishment. Once inside the gunmen locked the remaining employees in the restaurant and demanded the day’s profits from the manager. After collecting an estimated $3,000 the gunmen shot and killed the restaurant’s floor and kitchen managers. The assailants then locked the bodies in the freezer along with the surviving hostages. Police identified the victims as Jose Quiles and Raul Carreira. Police Superintendent Agustin Cartagena said they have already requested the surveillance tapes from the hotel’s security cameras. Meanwhile another double murder took place in Rio Piedras on Thursday evening. The victims were identified as Joel Lamboy Ruiz, 22, and Jorge Rivera Hernandez, 19, both residents of Monacillos. According to police agent Jose M. Perez, Lamboy Ruiz was shot 28 times and Rivera Hernandez was shot six. Police are investigating. Acevedo Vila To Address Nation Weekly Via Radio April 16, 2004 SAN JUAN (AP) — For the remaining Sundays of this election year there will be a regular dose of politics. Popular Democratic Party (PNP) candidate for governor, Anibal Acevedo Vila, announced on Friday that starting next Sunday he will speak on the radio from 9:00 to 10:00 in the morning on WKAQ and at 12 noon on Island Radio. "During the address, Anibal will directly communicate to the Puerto Rican people his vision of a positive revolution that will reshape the way government is conducted," stated Acevedo Vila’s campaign manager, Carlos Dalmau. Each week he will present a different topic. This Sunday’s address will focus on economic development. Acevedo Vila is spokeswoman, Juanita Colombani, could not accurately say how much the weekly radio programs would cost the PDP> Vilá. Rivera Schatz, Lambastes PDP And Journalists By Laura Rivera Melendez of Associated Press April 16, 2004 San Juan (AP) — New Progressive Party (NPP) Electoral Commissioner Thomas Rivera Schatz said on Friday that his party was not going to answer the opposition’s presentation of a calendar and card game in which the convictions for fraud schemes under former Gov. Pedro Rossello administration are presented. Still Rivera Schatz insulted leaders of the PDP and journalists by calling them pathological liars, corrupt and unethical. "This is no personal. What we are saying is the truth. Anibal Jose (Torres — PDP General Secretary) your candidate is weak and you are corrupt," said Rivera Schatz in a loud voice. And then, moving from one side of the room to the other, he made reference to the journalist who first broke the story regarding Rossello’s pension. "Did you listen correctly Oscarito? (referring to the journalist), did you listen correctly (Anibal) Acevedo Vila? I know that you probably don’t understand, but your inability is no reason for citizens of Puerto Rico not to know the truth," said Rivera Schatz adding that he was willing to find them a tutor. In addition Rivera Schatz reaffirmed that there is no need to make public the former governor’s retirement file, even though Rossello said he would make it public. "I say there is no need to hand in anything, enough with the joke to which they want submit Pedro Rossello. He has a perfect right to decide how he will make it public, the press will not decide, the retirement administration will not decide, no one will decide it," he said. Verdejo Signs With Wildcats April 15, 2004 TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Florida high school standout who played for a Massachusetts prep school last season has signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball for the University of Arizona. Jesus Verdejo, a 6-foot, 4-inch guard-forward from San Juan, Puerto Rico, averaged 22.9 points per game while leading The Winchendon School to a 32-5 record and championship of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council championship. Verdejo played for Christian High School in Miami, Fla., averaging 28 points per game as a senior in 2002-03. As a junior, he was part of the Christian High team that went 37-2 and won the Florida 1A state championship. He finished his career as the school's career scoring leader with 2,152 points in two seasons.
