January 5, 2002 SAN JUAN (AP) - After exchanging gifts and even a bat with Gov. Sila Calderon, Dominican baseball player Sammy Sosa visited Friday two humble communities in San Juan - La Perla and Barrio Obrero - where he distributed gifts to children of limited resources. About his encounter with the governor, Sosa said he made a commitment with her to carry out a social aid project together. On an aside with The Associated Press, Sosa indicated that "no one can control" the constant illegal trips of Dominicans to the Puerto Rican coast. "The only thing I can comment is that we have no control of that. It's things that happen and will continue to happen. the people leave Cuba for Miami; it's the same thing," he said. The baseball player is the idol of his compatriots as was confirmed by several of his followers. Amaury Cabrera, 22, said Sosa's visit to his community shows his concern for those who are disadvantaged. "It's good to see a person like Sammy take time from his loaded agenda to share with the humble community," he said. Another fanatic of Sosa's sports career, Milton de Leon, 7, arrived at "El Cantonal" with a shirt of his baseball team with No. 21, the same number that Sosa uses. "This is very special for me because he is my idol, and I've never seen him in person," the minor cheerfully said as he waited in line for Sosa to autograph his baseball. From here, Sosa returns to the Dominican Republic to participate in a special delivery of contact lenses for thousands of Dominican children.
