Considered the Holy Kings of the Puerto Rico National Fiesta, the celebration dates from the 19th century. The first parade was held Jan. 6, 1884. In the beginning, the whole town dressed up as shepherds and joined up with a musical band to accompany Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar on their route. In 1940, a "Kings Dialogue" was added to the parade to explain Epiphany's significance and the symbolism of gold, incense, and myrrh given to Jesus. Nowadays, before the National Fiesta, Juana Díaz's Three Kings offer a National Parade through several towns as ambassadors of joy and solemnity. Their peregrination culminates in Juana Díaz, known as "Puerto Rico's Bethlehem." The Holy Kings National Fiesta places the event in its corresponding position within religious culture. After a four-day journey through several regions of the island, Juana Díaz's Three Kings return Jan. 6 to their town to celebrate their traditional parade, beginning at 10 a.m. in Plaza Román Baldorioty de Castro. As part of the event, a prophecies proclamation will be read and an artistic show will be held featuring such musical groups as Plena Libre, Albacaná, Casima, and Cipey, and the clowns Remi and Kikelín.
