Many Activities Celebrate First Puerto Rican Veterans Week

SAN JUAN (AP) - Veteran's Advocate Luis Ramos announced the beginning of the "Puerto Rican Veterans Week" with a series of events and activities in recognition of the former Puerto Rican soldiers.

According to official figures, 18,000 Puerto Ricans participated in World War I. Another 65,034 served in World War II; 61,000 more in the Korean War; 48,000 in Vietnam; 4,300 in the Persian Gulf War; and 700 in the conflict of Somalia.

The advocate said for the first time, Puerto Rican veterans will be honored throughout a whole week.

Ramos said there will be recreational and cultural events, as well as talks, clinics, and workshops in San Juan, Ponce, Loiza, San German, Caguas, Utuado, and Carolina.

"We have to be concerned about improving the Puerto Rican veteran's quality of life with information on benefits in the areas of health, education, and legal aspects and the claims to which the veteran has rights," the advocate said in a press release.

As part of the calendar of activities, the formal acts will take place at the Acuaexpreso facilities in Hato Rey on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m.

Gov. Sila Calderon and Resident Commissioner Anibal Acevedo Vila will be the speakers at the activity.

This event will count with the artistic participation of the "Niño de Tras Talleres," Andy Montañez, and the "Chica Bomba," Ashley, as well as the Puerto Rico Police Trio and for the children's enjoyment, Payaso Remi.

The series of activities, Ramos said, will continue Monday in the municipality of Loiza where the Veteran's Day Marathon will take place.

On Tuesday, a workshop on the Puerto Rican Veteran's Letter of Rights will be conducted for all the veterans confined in the Cucharas Prison in Ponce.

The Veteran's Advocate also informed that tribute will be paid to the extraordinary labor of the woman veteran during the First Puerto Rican Woman Veteran Congress that will take place Wednesday at the Carolina Municipal Assembly Chamber.

On Thursday, a second workshop on the Puerto Rican Veteran's Letter of Rights will be conducted for the veterans of the western area at the Teatro Sol of the municipality of San German.

For the veterans of the central area, a Health, Services, and Employment Fair was organized at the public square in the municipality of Utuado on Friday, starting at 8 a.m., Ramos said.

On Saturday, a family day will take place dedicated to the Korean veterans, with music by Mario Hernandez y su Sexteto and Rey Martinez y la Sensacion, in the square of Cayey.

The advocate also informed that there will be an exhibition of the medals of honor of Congress in the rotunda of the Capitol until next Sunday.
