PUERTO RICO REPORT

Puerto Ricans Most Concerned about Economy

A recent poll of a sample of 800 Puerto Rico registered voters conducted by a major national polling firm indicates that voters' top concerns are local governance and economic issues. Most people are not confident that Puerto Rico is prepared for another hurricane and blame local officials more than the federal government for the slow pace hurricane recovery. Lack of jobs is perceived as the primary reason people move to the mainland, and most people polled believe that Puerto Ricans who have moved will not return. Similarly, although Puerto Rico's territorial status remains important to voters, residents are looking to political leaders more for leadership on pocketbook issues. Support for statehood is consistent with historical levels; the impact of the 2017 hurricanes did not noticeably shift opinions on status. Roughly two-thirds of respondents favor statehood, and support for independence/free association has risen slightly. Support for the current territorial status of Puerto Rico has been reduced in half over the past four years.
