CARIBBEAN BUSINESS Hospital Metropolitano investing $28 million on three new buildings and remodeling May 20, 2005 Río Piedras-based Hospital Metropolitano, part of hospital conglomerate Sistema de Salud Metropolitano (SSM), will be investing $28 million to build a clinical building, a medical office tower, and a multistory parking structure. Public hearings on this project concluded last week, and construction is expected to begin by August, said Gilberto González, executive director. "The expansion will add 430,162 square feet to our operations," explained González, adding the remodeling of Hospital Metropolitano’s façade and rooms is also part of the project. "Now, we are remodeling our rooms. We have around 70 rooms with a total of 122 beds in use. Also, the hospital’s façade will be revamped this summer." By August, González expects to begin construction on an 11-story parking structure, with space for 750 cars on the site of the hospital’s current parking lot. Also under construction will be a three-story clinical building. "On the first floor, we will have two emergency rooms, one for adults, with 24 beds, and the other for pediatric patients, with 11 beds," González said. "The second floor will house seven operating rooms." He explained this may allow the hospital to expand its offering of cosmetic surgeries. The third and last floor will have 44 beds, some of which will be designated VIP rooms, he said. Along with the clinical building, a seven-story medical office tower will be built in front of the hospital. "The first floor of the building will have commercial space," González said. He also revealed engineering firm Fernando Sumaza & Co. will participate in the construction projects as a joint-venture partner. SSM operates other health facilities in Puerto Rico besides its namesake Hospital Metropolitano. González said the conglomerate includes Tito Mattei Hospital in Yauco, San Germán’s former Diagnostic & Treatment Center, Hospital Metropolitano in Cabo Rojo, and two hospitals in Arecibo: Hospital Susoni and Cayetano Coll y Toste.
