Visitors Are Enchanted With Puerto Rico's Rich Arts

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- From inspirational and educational art exhibits to vivacious music and dance festivals, the splendors of Puerto Rico's culture are waiting to captivate visitors through the arts. The Festival Casals, honoring Puerto Rican musical legend, Pablo Casals, is celebrating its 49th season this year and the San Juan Print Triennial, Puerto Rico's cultural event of the year, is featuring over 250 works of art from throughout Latin America. These inspiring events are two of the many ways visitors can experience true Puerto Rican culture through the arts. Following are details of the special events taking place this year.

* At the San Juan Center for the Perfoming Arts, the Casals Festival (2/26-3/12), founded in 1957 by famous cellist, conductor and composer Pablo Casals, brings to San Juan the world's most important musical talent. This season, Justino Diaz and Elias Lopez Soba celebrate their third year brilliantly directing this festival musically and artistically. * As part of the San Juan Print Triennial: Latin America and the Caribbean (12/4/04-3/6/05), the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture is featuring in galleries all over the San Juan metropolitan area, the exhibition "Trans/Migrations: Printmaking As Contemporary Art". This exhibition features works by over 100 artists and collectives from 14 countries, including the United States and Canada. * The Puerto Rican Danza Week (5/17-5/23) commemorates what is the most expressive art form in the Puerto Rican culture: danza music and dance. Rooted in Puerto Rico's Spanish heritage, danza was originally enjoyed by the wealthy as a common social activity. Eventually, the music became a tradition for all Puerto Rican people. * The Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Fest (6/2-6/5) has grown to become recognized by jazz critics and lovers as a true jazz event. It is the only festival that highlights Latin jazz while covering the entire spectrum of jazz styles. * At the Artisan's Fair (6/3-6/5) more than 200 artisans gather at Plaza Darsenas and the Paseo La Princesa in Old San Juan to display and exhibit their creations. * The year round Puerto Rico Le Lo Lai Festival is a series of weekly shows of popular and folkloric music presented Thursday to Sunday at various locations throughout the island. * The Puerto Rico Museum of Art, located in Santurce, featuring artistic traditions of painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, folk art, photography and other contemporary media, is nearly 500 years old. * The Museum of the Americas in Old San Juan, located in the ancient Cuartel de Ballaja building constructed by the Spanish military in 1854, offers through its permanent and temporary exhibits, a vision of history and culture of the Americas.
