With 8,987 units sold in Puerto Rico and an additional 1,813 in Central America and the rest of the Caribbean during 2004, the Puerto Rico and Caribbean region ranked fifth among Chrysler Group’s international markets, announced Chrysler Group Executive Director of International Sales & Marketing Thomas Hausch during an exclusive interview held during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

As a token of appreciation and to "pat on the back" the local Chrysler Group team and the local dealer network, Hausch will visit the island late next month. It will be Hausch’s first visit to the island since he was named executive director of international sales and marketing in 2001.

Sales and marketing of Chrysler Group’s Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep products in the Caribbean region (including Puerto Rico) are handled by Chrysler Group division Chrysler International Services S.A., with an office in Guaynabo’s Metro Office Park. The office is headed by David Elmore and Franco Sotomayor.

"The team at our Puerto Rico office has done a fantastic job, and more importantly, our new products and our dealers have convinced our customers to buy our products," said Hausch. "Puerto Rico is one of our most important markets internationally, currently No. 5. I’m looking forward to my trip to the island next month."

Thomas said he felt "uncomfortable" with the fact he hadn’t visited Puerto Rico during the past four years while Puerto Rico had consistently overachieved its sales target during the same time.

"I’m very proud of the team we have in Puerto Rico. We have a group of very good dealers, good marketing placement but, more importantly, our new products have been-well received by our customers," said Hausch. "That’s the most important job."

Hausch said that although Chrysler Group had the biggest product launch in its history in 2004 with the introduction of 10 new products, the automaker’s product offensive was by no means over.

"We aren’t done yet with the revamping of our product lineup. The years 2001 to 2003 were the turnaround years, which we successfully completed. From the years 2004 to 2007, you will see unprecedented product introductions," said the Chrysler Group executive. "We are on a very good roll and it seems we’re going to continue our success with the new Dodge Charger, and there’s more to come in the next few years."

The Dodge Charger–one of the biggest names from the muscle-car era of the 1960s–will muscle its way back to local dealers in October. The all-new 2006 four-door Dodge Charger, said Hausch, pays homage to the muscle cars of the 1960s but adds 21st century performance and technology.

Hausch declined to give any sales or number projections. However, he said the company had solid expectations for the Charger in both the local and stateside markets, where demand for rear-wheel-drive, four-door sedans was high. The Charger is being manufactured at the automaker’s Brampton Assembly Plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada along with the Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300C.
