SAN JUAN (AP) - The transition committees of Gov. Pedro Rossello and Gov.- elect Sila Calderon agreed at least on one issue: the healthcare card is here to stay.

Former Government Development Bank President Ramon Cantero Frau and CPA Enrique Vila del Corral, who lead Calderon's transition team, made the announcement during a press conference Wednesday.

"We assure the outgoing committee that the commitment of Calderon's administration is to obviously maintain the healthcare card," said Cantero Frau.

He said the new administration will seek to establish a balance between the insurance companies, the doctors, and the patients to make the healthcare card economically viable.

SAN JUAN (AP) - The Puerto Rico Catholic Church announced Monday that Carlos Manuel "Charlie" Rodriguez will be beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 29.

"We want to announce with great joy the date of the beatification of Carlos Rodriguez," San Juan Archbishop Monsignor Roberto Gonzalez said in the company of Caguas Bishop Alvaro Corrada del Rio, Puerto Rican Episcopal Confederation President Ulises Casiano, and priest Romualdo Rodriguez.

Corrada del Rio said parishioners will promote the life and work of the religious layman throughout the island.

The first person in the Americas to be beatified was Juan de Dios, a Mexican who claimed he saw an apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe more than 400 years ago.

SAN JUAN (AP) - Gov. Pedro Rossello said Monday that he complied with 100% of his platform promises to the people since he was first elected in 1992.

In a last meeting Monday of his "Rendering Accounts" tradition, several agency chiefs made separate presentations to highlight accomplishments of the Rossello administration in the areas of economic development, public security, and social development.

"There will be people that will diminish these efforts. I know that in the future, these actions will talk louder than whatever critic," Rossello said.

He mentioned that his administration complied with the 617 promises he used as a base for his government platform.

He highlighted the health and education reform, as well as police salary increases, the acquisition of modern police equipment, and what he considers a decrease in violent crimes.

A voluminous report about the work of the Rossello administration was given to people attending the meeting at the Government Reception Center in Old San Juan.

SAN JUAN — The political dossier on Popular Democratic Party (PDP) founder and Gov. Luis Muñoz Marin kept by the FBI reveals not only that he and his family were persecuted by law enforcement agencies, but also the transition from the one who was chased to one who was protected, Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) Sen. Manuel Rodriguez Orellana said Monday.

Rodriguez Orellana made his statements during public hearings by the Senate Government and Federal Affairs Committee, which is investigating the cooperation between local and federal officials in creating political dossiers, or "carpetas," on Puerto Ricans because of their political beliefs.

Rossello: Image, Not Corruption, Is The Problem

SAN JUAN (AP) - Gov. Pedro Rossello on Monday blamed the local press for creating an image in the U.S. media of Puerto Rico as a "ghetto of corruption" under his administration.

Rossello was reacting to a recent three-page article published by Business Week, which details recent federal charges against officials in the Rossello administration for fraud with federal funds.

"The article does not surprise me because you [journalists] have projected Puerto Rico as a ghetto of corruption," the governor said.

Rossello said U.S. journalists read the local press to see what the situation is before they do their stories. He said what is written there reflects what is published locally.

The governor insisted that his administration has been the one that has fought more against government corruption.

SAN JUAN (AP) - Outgoing House Speaker Edison Misla Aldarondo said New Progressive Party (NPP) President Carlos Pesquera should remain in office and run again for the governorship in 2004.

Misla rejected claims that there is a rift in the NPP over who will be the leader of the minority delegation in the upcoming Legislature, according to published reports.

"The clear truth is that the overwhelming majority, the grassroots leaders, and as far as I know, the totality of House members, and the re-elected delegation support Carlos Pesquera as president of the party and as leader of the reorganization process. And in our opinion, he would be a magnificent candidate to represent us again as gubernatorial candidate in 2004," Misla said.
