ASSOCIATED PRESSMacy's Opens In Puerto RicoOctober 26, 2000 SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Thousands of shoppers turned out for the opening day of Macy's new store in Puerto Rico - the chain's first location outside of the continental United States. The department store opened Wednesday at San Juan's Plaza Las Americas mall. Crowds of curious shoppers came to the 255,000-square-foot store, which has three floors of merchandise and employs more than 800 people. "I came here on Monday (for the pre-opening) and bought something, but they didn't give us time to see everything. It's so big," shopper Delba Velez told El Nuevo Dia newspaper. Macy's expects the new store in the U.S. Caribbean territory to make more than $70 million in sales in its first year, regional chief executive Hal Kahn told The San Juan Star newspaper. Puerto Rico's population of 4 million, on a 100-by-35-mile island, boasts some of the highest sales per square foot for a variety of U.S. retail chains. J.C. Penney and Kmart built some of their largest stores here in the past few years based on strong sales, and Sears and Wal-Mart are also on the island. San Juan's shoppers have anxiously awaited Macy's arrival since the company announced its plans three years ago. "It's so beautiful - just as I had hoped," shopper Luz Elvira Velez told El Nuevo Dia. Macy's, owned by Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores, has 90 locations in the United States.
