CARIBBEAN BUSINESSCanovanas Is The Site For Puerto Rico’s Second Breweryby MARIALBA MARTINEZJuly 20, 2000 Florida Brewing Inc. will start constructing a $40 million brewery in Canovanas that is slated for inauguration in October 2001. Ramon Campos, who heads the project’s group of investors, and Xavier Romeu, Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce made the announcement this week. Campos added that the brewery is expected to create over 60 new jobs and add $70 million to the island’s economy. The brewery–to be called Cerveceria Puerto Rico–will be located on a 45-acre lot overlooking El Yunque Rainforest, which will provide the water used in the beer’s elaboration. The group expects to produce 20 million cases of beer annually, for local consumption and exportation to the Caribbean and the U.S. The brewery will create several products, among them a new brand of beer for the local market, several beer brands for international distribution, and various malt drinks. The Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company will construct the facility housing the brewery and a future restaurant. "We are very pleased that a project of this importance for the economic development of Puerto Rico is being developed. This new company will extend to local and export markets, using high technology," said Romeu. One aspect differentiating the brewery from similar projects is the environmental considerations that are part of its planning. "Just as water conservation is being planned to maintain the water clean and pure, we will also plant trees and other kinds of vegetation that are in danger of extinction. For this purpose, CPR hired environmentalist Neftali Garcia, who has already submitted an extensive study to the Environmental Quality Board," Campos told CARIBBEAN BUSINESS. Germany’s Ziemann Architects were responsible for incorporating the high technology and industrial sophistication to CPR’s design, already completed. The firm–the largest of its kind in the world–has designed and manufactured equipment for some of the top industry breweries around the world. These include Anheuser-Bush, Coors, Miller Brewing Co., Cerveceria Corona, Heineken, Polar, and Presidente, among others. A totally automated production line will be installed by Krones, also from Germany. In Puerto Rico, Cerveceria India in Mayaguez brews approximately 3 million cases of Meddall Light beer (See related story, p. 4 ) as well as India beer.
