CARIBBEAN BUSINESS CARIBBEAN BUSINESS Launches Conference SeriesNew York’s First Lady Libby Pataki Kicks Off Series With Discussion On Social Issues By CB STAFF November 6, 2003 Libby Pataki, the first lady of New York, will be the keynote speaker at the first in a series of conferences presented by CARIBBEAN BUSINESS. The luncheon conference will take place Nov. 20 at the Bankers Club in Hato Rey. "We are honored to begin our conference series with Mrs. Libby Pataki," said Manuel A. Casiano, editor in chief of CARIBBEAN BUSINESS & chairman of Casiano Communications. "She is an exemplary leader and a distinguished first lady of New York. I know her insights will prove valuable to the leaders of Puerto Rico." Casiano explained that the purpose of the CARIBBEAN BUSINESS conference series is to bring engaging speakers with excellent reputations as leaders in their respective fields or professions to share their knowledge and experiences with the Puerto Rico business community and the community at large. "Mrs. Pataki is an excellent start for our series. We are very proud that she has accepted," said Casiano. In her role as first lady of New York, Pataki has championed many causes related to the family, children, women, and motherhood. During the conference, Pataki will share her personal experiences and provide valuable information regarding these social issues. Pataki has worked hand in hand with her husband, New York Gov. George Pataki, to support various social causes. In the 1970s, she worked at the Northern Westchester Center for Abused Women. As first lady, she has visited shelters across the state and has spoken out against domestic violence. Another issue Pataki is passionate about is breast cancer awareness and prevention. The disease has affected her personally: Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and two of her aunts died of the disease. Pataki has visited numerous clinics for the economically disadvantaged and has helped to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Pataki was involved in drafting New York’s Women’s Health & Cancer Rights Act of 1997 and proclaimed Oct. 19 New York State Mammography Day. Her efforts have been recognized with several service awards from the American Cancer Society and other organizations.
