The Puerto Rico Convention Center District Authority has initiated the Request for Qualification (RFQ) process to find companies interested in developing the convention center’s 850-room anchor hotel.

The district has permits for a developer to build a hotel with a minimum of 500 and a maximum of 850 rooms, a casino, movie theaters, and an entertainment center.

The first stage of the RFQ process is scheduled for completion by December, when the best bidders in terms of experience, planning, development, and hotel operations will be determined.

The Evaluation Committee will make its recommendation to the board of the District Authority, which will select the winning bidder. "The RFQ process has been divided into two parts because the District Authority understands that developing and operating an anchor hotel requires an evaluation of the bidder’s ability to execute a successful project," said Manuel Sanchez, executive director of the Puerto Rico Convention Center District Authority.

The convention center’s anchor hotel will be adjacent to the forthcoming convention center in Isla Grande. The convention center, which is already 29% complete, should be ready by June 2005.

Colliers International, a global real-estate services firm, is in charge of receiving the proposals, which must be submitted no later than Nov. 12.
