CARIBBEAN BUSINESS Promoexport Inaugurates Export Resource CenterLooking to round up exporters to attend FTAA Business Forum in November By MARIALBA MARTINEZ October 9, 2003 Yesterday the Commerce Development Administration’s (CDA) Promoexport inaugurated its Export Resource Center, which contains a library that provides electronic access to exporters’ websites along with a new resource called the "Practical Guide for Exporters." The new publication will be available from Promoexport in hard copy and through the Promoexport website, www.promoexport.com. "The ‘Practical Guide for Exporters’ leads local businesspeople who are interested in exporting their goods through the entire process," said Promoexport Executive Director Antonio Sosa Pascual. "The guide explains in simple terms how to: determine the benefits, opportunities, and risks of exporting; investigate potential markets; look for international clients; use Free Trade Zones; and decide whether to export directly, indirectly, or by joining a partnership." Promoexport prepared the guide with assistance from professionals in the export industry and interns in the international trade program from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and Inter American University. Also participating were the Small Business Development Center, the UPR Educational Center for International Trade, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), Ernesto Reyes Inc., GTA Emarketing, and the P.R. Export Council. "A second guide, for businesses that import goods to Puerto Rico, should be ready next month," said Sosa Pascual. "This is all part of turning Promoexport into an international trade center." He also announced that the P.R. Export Council will receive a $250,000 grant for fiscal year 2004. The council, headed by former banking executive Annie Mustafa, is already operating from Promoexport’s offices. Promoexport has committed to a second $250,000 grant in fiscal year 2005. Last week Sosa Pascual, P.R. Export Council President Chiry Vassallo, and Manchester Trade consultant David Lewis met with local exporters to invite them to the eighth Business Forum in Florida from Nov. 17 to 19. The group is trying to gather a local delegation of exporters to meet with the more than 2,000 business representatives from the 34 countries involved in negotiations for the Free Trade Area of the Americas, which should be implemented in 2005.
