Since 2001, Puerto Rico’s Crowley Liner Services has invested $77 million to purchase new equipment and refurbish its tugboats and barges, said Crowley Vice President & General Manager Roberto Lugo.

"For the past two years, our company has spent $59 million to buy and lease new containers and another $18 million to refurbish our tugboats and barges in Puerto Rico," said Lugo.

"This is twice what Sea Star Lines spent last year to purchase Navieras."

This year, Crowley will add 3,150 new 45-foot-long, 102-inch-wide and 53-foot-long, 102-inch-wide dry container / chassis combinations. The shipping company recently announced it would add 399 new refrigerated and insulated container / chassis combinations to its fleet. Of those, 125 new 45-foot-long, 102-inch-wide Super Refrigerated containers equipped with Thermo King Magnum refrigeration units will be used exclusively for the Puerto Rico-U.S. mainland market.

The remaining 131 new 40-foot-long, 96-inch-wide high-cube refrigerated container / chassis combinations and 143 new 45-foot-long, 102-inch-wide Super Insulated containers will be distributed among the company’s terminals in the U.S., the Caribbean, and Latin America. Super Insulated containers have six-side insulation that keeps products such as ice cream, fish, and pharmaceuticals colder for longer.
