CARIBBEAN BUSINESS Ports Authority To Pump $38 Million Into LMM’s Terminal ALuis Muñoz Marin International Airport Adapting To Cruise Ship Passenger Needs By EVELYN GUADALUPE-FAJARDO July 10, 2003 The Puerto Rico Ports Authority is investing $38 million to reconstruct Terminal A at the Luis Muñoz Marin (LMM) International Airport in Carolina so it can specifically service cruise ship passengers and business groups, who travel with a large amount of luggage and need bus transportation. The Ports Authority is expected to make the announcement of the upcoming improvements at LMM Airport on July 14. The refurbishing of Terminal A comes on the heels of the yet-to-be-completed expansion and rehabilitation of Terminal B, the former Eastern Airlines terminal, where Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Continental Airlines, Air Santo Domingo, United Airlines, and US Airways operate. Approximately 90,000 square feet were added to Terminal B, which measured 381,826 square feet. Now, it has the capacity to accommodate another 100 airline reservation ticket counters; it originally had 43. The old dingy carpeting was removed, and the escalators and elevators were fixed at a cost of $28.5 million. The airport in Carolina will also be getting a much-needed facelift in the form of a fresh coat of paint this summer. The LMM airport hotel is now being remodeled and should be ready early next year. Furthermore, the Puerto Rico Tourism Co. plans to introduce a new tourist information center at Terminal B. It also is working in conjunction with the Ports Authority to beautify the airport in order to take it to the next level. The Tourism Co. will be providing two murals, one resembling El Yunque Rain Forest and the other of Porta del Sol (the west coast), to be displayed inside the terminal.
