Pridco Reports 1,696 New Jobs Created, 2,132 Jobs Lost Through May

Seventy-six percent of company openings were new businesses; 68% of company closings were local

Statistics from the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Co. (Pridco) indicate that 1,696 new jobs were created and 2,132 jobs were lost in the 11 months between July 1, 2002 and May 31, 2003.

A total of 58 companies opened during this period and added 1,696 jobs. Of the 58 companies, 44 were new businesses that together added 1,162 jobs. The remaining 14 businesses were almost evenly divided between expansions of existing businesses and industry-related service companies. The total number of job commitments was 2,422, mostly in the instruments, electric / electronic, and rubber / plastic products sectors.

Through May 31, 2003, there were 34 company closings and 2,132 jobs lost. Nonlocal company closings numbered 11, with 1,864 jobs lost. The balance (23) was made up of local companies, with a loss of 268 jobs. Most of the lost jobs were in the apparel, electric / electronics, and chemical / pharmaceutical sectors.

Pridco also reported 146 project promotions through May 2003, which together have the potential to create 8,435 new jobs. New-business promotions totaled 65 companies with 2,851 job commitments, $42.5 million in payroll, and $69.1 million in equipment & machinery investments.
