IT'S time for some salsa, the Latin American dance that's been spreading wild all over the world.

Salsa is the most popular type of Latin dance - a result of a musical evolution of various types of Latin rhythms.

It began in New York in the `30s taking influences along the way from different Latin music styles and afro jazz.

Modern salsa now incorporates a variety of influences of dance styles, routine and music from Columbia, Cuba and Puerto Rico, Latin New York and Miami.

If you're looking for a spot to practise or learn the dance, check out the Salsabor at 32-1,Jalan Telawi 5, Bangsar, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when Othman `Mongo Mambo' Rahman teaches you how. "If you can walk, you can salsa," he says. He conducts Beginner I classes at 7.15pm, while Beginner II, for the better ones, starts at 8.30pm. Call (016) 6906212 for details.

On Thursdays and Fridays, Amy and Juhanis of Salsa Fuerte conduct classes for novices at 8pm and the more experienced at 9pm.

Juhanis said that Salsa Fuerte also provides Latin dance performances for private functions such as company dinners or product launches.

Classes are also held at 8pm on Wednesdays at the Conlay Club. * Call Juhanis (013-3470335) or Amy (012-6977136) for details.
