Companies Could Make $700 Million In Federal ContractsDepartments Of Homeland Security, Defense Among Participants In Federal Procurement Conference By KEN OLIVER-MENDEZ April 24, 2003 Key contracting officials with signing authority from 11 major federal agencies will converge on San Juan for the First Annual Conference for Negotiating Federal Government Contracts, June 3 to 5 at Wyndham Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino. The event is being organized by the newly formed Comite Federal Pro Empresas, which is operated by Juan F. Woodroffe & Associates. Woodroffe’s firm recently won a three-year contract from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency to run the Puerto Rico Minority Business Opportunity Committee. "President Bush has given an across-the-board mandate to have federal government agencies identify and increase the amount of business they do with Hispanic firms," said Woodroffe. "Puerto Rico is a prime location for federal agencies to find these resources." Woodroffe indicated that the value of the potential contract opportunities on the island could reach $700 million. Among the agencies that have confirmed their participation in the conference are the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the General Services Administration, the Department of Housing & Urban Development, the Department of Transportation, the Veterans Administration, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Energy, the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Commerce, and the Department of the Interior. Woodroffe said the conference would be of great interest to a wide range of local manufacturers, distributors, and professional services firms. Procurement opportunities slated to be discussed range from routine federal purchases to the latest developments in procurement opportunities in areas such as homeland security and defense. Both Gov. Sila Calderon and Resident Commissioner Anibal Acevedo-Vila are slated to speak at the conference. In organizing the effort, Woodroffe said the new Comite Federal Pro Empresas has representation from Puerto Rico’s leading business organizations. Among the committee members are leaders of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, the Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association, the Puerto Rico United Retailers Association, the Puerto Rico Products Association, the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Co., and the district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
