CARIBBEAN BUSINESS Stryker Inaugurates $30 Million Expansion Of Arroyo Plant Company adds 127 new high-technology jobs to its work force By MARIALBA MARTINEZ March 13, 2003 Stryker Corp.’s Medical Surgery Group inaugurated today a $29.8 million expansion of its Arroyo plant, which includes a research & development (R&D) center and adds 127 jobs to its work force of 587. According to Puerto Rico Industrial Development Co. (Pridco) Executive Director Hector Jimenez Juarbe, the agency granted Stryker $6 million for infrastructure improvements, $2.7 million toward the establishment of its R&D center in Puerto Rico, and $2 million as a special location incentive. Stryker invested $19.1 million in the new building’s construction, which began in 2002. The expansion entails a 222,000-square-foot addition, including 33,000 square feet of clean rooms, its own power-generation system, and parking for another 500 vehicles. Stryker’s new R&D center will provide support to existing manufacturing product lines during this stage, eventually moving up to investigation, design, testing & diagnostics, and manufacturing of medical surgical products for hip and knee replacement procedures and surgical endoscopy systems. Established in Puerto Rico since 1988, Stryker has already invested $15.2 million in manufacturing surgical instruments and medical video imaging equipment for arthroscopy and general surgery.
