Schering-Plough Corp.’s Las Piedras manufacturing plant was selected to produce Zetia, its new cholesterol-lowering drug. The decision will result in 40 new jobs and unspecified ongoing investment in the plant’s expansion and equipment, said Schering-Plough Las Piedras General Manager Frank Rodriguez.

"We are proud of the employees in. . .Las Piedras, who were instrumental in supporting the launch of an important new product for Schering-Plough," said Rodriguez. "The employees have made a significant contribution to Schering-Plough’s commitment to delivering quality products that meet important medical needs."

The Las Piedras facility has added more than 300 new jobs over the past three years and 25,000 square feet to the nonproduction and support areas, including the administration offices and dispensary. Other plans call for doubling the size of the cafeteria to 8,600 square feet and adding 115 parking spaces.

Sales of Zetia began on the U.S. mainland and in several international markets in November 2002. By year’s end 100,000 prescriptions had been written in the U.S., accounting for $23 million in sales.
