October 7, 2002 Luis Fonsi could easily be considered one of the busiest men in show business. The winner of three of this year’s "Tu Música" awards--Artist of the Year, Male Pop Recording of the Year, and People’s National Choice--Fonsi just finished touring with pop-princess Britney Spears. Now, the Puerto Rican balladeer takes a break from promoting not only his third but also his fourth album to embark on an international tour that kicks off in Puerto Rico and concludes in Spain. Under the title, "Fuera de Control" (Out of Control), he will perform at Roberto Clemente Coliseum Oct. 11-13. It’s a tight-lipped production since Tony Mojena, the concert producer, has reserved many of the details to maintain an element of surprise. What we did manage to dig up is that the performance will surpass last year’s, in which Fonsi flew inside the coliseum. So, what could beat that? Well, you’ll have to see the concert to find out. Fonsi will perform songs from his three Spanish albums, "Comenzaré," "Eterno," and "Amor Secreto," as well as tunes from his English debut album, "Fight the Feeling." He will showcase his moves alongside a troupe of dancers, who will perform modern-dance sequences choreographed by Danny Lugo. The out-of-control set design, a Francisco "Papo" Bigote creation, is said to be magnificent, like nothing ever seen before in Puerto Rico. Rounding out the production team is Wichie Sound Performance on sound and Musique Xpress is in charge of the spectacular light show. Wanting to deliver a first-rate, unimaginable concert, Fonsi has been closely involved with the "Fuera de Control" production aspect despite his continuous travels to promote his latest albums. Months of preparation and rehearsal have gone into this show, which the artists confides, "I feel very honored to have these three shows at Roberto Clemente Coliseum." The interpreter of "Amor Secreto" has accomplished a lot at such a young age. Having already proved himself as a singer, songwriter, and dancer, and earning fans across Latin America, Fonsi broke new ground with his debut English album, although for him it isn’t actually a crossover. "I’m not crossing over to anywhere; I’ve always been here. I’ve been singing in English all my life," the artist says. Born Luis Alfonso Rodríguez on April 15, 1978, in San Juan, Puerto Rico; the eldest of three, Fonsi evidenced his musical talent early on and was enrolled in San Juan Children’s Choir by age four. When he was 10, he moved with his family to Orlando, FL, where he hung out with other youngsters passionate about pop music. In high school, Fonsi sang jingles for Orlando radio and joined the Big Guys, a teen vocal group that included future NSYNC member Joey Fatone. Afterwards, Fonsi studied theory, harmony, voice, and composition at the prestigious Florida State University music school, where he also was a member of the University Choir, with whom he traveled to England. While recording a demo in Miami, Fonsi caught the attention of a Universal music executive, which led to the release of his debut Spanish album "Comenzare" (1998). This first effort was supported by a promotional tour that took him to many concert stages throughout Latin America and Europe. It was his chart-topping follow-up, "Eterno" (2000), featuring the smash hit "Imaginame Sin Ti," that catapulted Fonsi to glory. Fonsi was named Best New Male Pop Artist by the Globe Awards and received accolades from Tu Música and Paoli. In addition, the Recording Industry Association of America certified both of his albums gold. Other highlights in this young artist’s career have been his participation in "Jubileo 2000," a magnum celebration by the Catholic Church during which Fonsi had the honor to sing for Pope John Paul II; "El Ultimo Adiós," a commemorative act for victims of 9/11, which featured top names in Latin Music singing for President Bush at the White House; and last but certainly not least, the talented singer was selected as one of the "Most Beautiful" by the magazine People en Español. Currently, Fonsi is all smiles, enjoying the success of his third and fourth albums and gearing up for his "Fuera de Control" concert tour, which also will take him to New York, Orlando, Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Spain. The "Fuera de Control" concert at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey is scheduled for 8:30 p.m., Oct. 11 &12, and 5 p.m., Oct. 13.
