New York - Hispanic singing superstars Willie Colon and Marc Anthony are among a host of celebrities taking part in a national campaign to revive New York's sagging tourism industry, which was battered by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

According to details released Wednesday, the tourism campaign will be broadcast as a public service announcement (PSA) on 50 radio stations in the United States, including New York's Spanish-language stations La Mega and Amor, as well as in Puerto Rico.

Among the celebrities taking part in the campaign are Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Lee Gifford, Vanessa Williams and Dominic Chiamese, who plays "Uncle Junior" in the award-winning series "The Sopranos."

Fashion designer Nicole Miller and former New York Mayor Ed Koch are also expected to participate in the campaign.

The PSAs, which will be broadcast beginning this weekend through Sept. 15, can also be heard by calling New York City's tourism office, the mayor's office and several hotels.

In his Spanish-language announcement, Colon, who was born and raised in the New York borough of the Bronx, invites people to enjoy the many attractions the city offers, from Broadway plays to concerts, sports, museums, zoos, night clubs, outings and "of course, salsa dancing."

"People need to know that New York is safe and friendly, and there's so much to do here," Colon, who was appointed major events and tourism promotion adviser by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, said.

"New Yorkers themselves need to understand that tourism is good for the city and they don't have to go anywhere else because they have everything here," the singer added.

Meanwhile, Travel & Leisure magazine selected New York as the "World's Best North American City" for the second consecutive year.

The city beat out San Francisco; Vancouver, British Columbia; Chicago and Santa Fe.

"This prestigious award ... affirms what we all know to be true - that New York City is open for business and ready to welcome the world's travelers with the best hotels, food, culture, arts and shopping on the planet," Bloomberg said.
