If you wanted to create your own Dream Team of Puerto Rican baseball players, the American League is the first place to start.

The list includes the best catcher in the majors, the best designated hitter in the league, and two of the most-feared batters in Major League Baseball.

Starting by statistical position, here are the top Puerto Rican players in the American League for the 2002 season.

Position 1--Pitcher: José Rosado, Kansas City Royals

Rosado didn't play last season, but that doesn't mean the Royals discarded him. On the contrary, Kansas City scouts were in Puerto Rico during the recent Winter Baseball League season, taking a closer look at Rosado, who is expected to be one of the aces on the team. He went on the injured list May 4 (retroactive to May 1) with tendonitis in his left shoulder, for which he underwent arthroscopic surgery in Los Angeles on June 23. The injury occurred in 2000, with Rosado finishing the season with a 2-2 record and a 5.86 ERA in five starts, allowing 29 hits in 27.2 innings and striking out 15 batters and posting 2 quality starts. Now, completely recuperated, expect Rosado to be one of the top left-handers in the American League.

Position 2--Catcher: Iván Rodríguez, Texas Rangers

Baseball's premier catcher is back after appearing in just 91 games, his fewest since his rookie season in 1991 (88). Despite being sidelined for the season on July 24 with a fractured right thumb, Rodríguez ranked 2nd in the club in homers (27), RBIs (83), and total bases (242), placed 4th in runs (66) and doubles (27), and was 5th in hits (126). He also won his 9th-consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Award and started his 8th-consecutive All-Star Game behind the plate, both one shy of the all-time record for a catcher, held by Johnny Bench. Rodríguez is simply the best catcher in the majors.

Position 3--First Base: Carlos Delgado, Toronto Blue Jays

One of the most-feared batters in the majors, Delgado had an "average" season, hitting .279 with 31 doubles, 39 home runs, and 102 RBIs. Still, it was his 4th-consecutive season, with 35 HRs and 100 RBIs, finishing 6th in the AL in home runs, 5th in on-base percentage (.408), 7th in HR frequency (14.7 AB), tied for 2nd in walks (111), 3rd in intentional walks (22), 3rd in hits by pitch (16) and times on base (287), and was 8th in strikeouts (136). In 2002, he is expected to look "better" than that.

Position 4--Second Base: Luis Alicea, Kansas City Royals

Although he hasn't the numbers to be considered an All-Star, Alicea is well-known as one of the most-consistent utilities in the majors. He had played the majority of his 10-year career with the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers and never had gone to the minors due to his extraordinary ability to play any position. Last season, he hit .274 with 6 homers and 56 RBIs, among the top of all major-league utility players.

Position 5--Third Base: Felipe López, Toronto Blue Jays

For many, he a player of the future. López's favorite position is shortstop, but he realizes he will have to play third base and other infield positions if he wants to stay in the big leagues. He's coming from posting a strong season with the Santurce Cangrejeros in the Puerto Rico Winter League and should see more playing time now as a second-year player. Last season, he split his year between Tennessee (AA), Syracuse (AAA), and Toronto, where he hit .260 in 49 games with 5 doubles, 4 triples, 5 home runs, and 23 RBIs. Definitely, a player to watch this season, where he should show he's ready to become a starter with the Blue Jays.

Position 6--Shortstop: José Valentin, Chicago White Sox

Another player who can play any position, Valentin began his career as a shortstop, but was moved to the outfield in 2000. Last season, he returned to the infield position and hit .258, but showing some power with 28 home runs and 68 RBIs in 124 games. The White Sox will need a strong season from him if they want to remain contenders in the American League Central Division.

Position 7--Left Field: Wilfredo Cordero, Cleveland Indians

Always considered a strong hitter, Cordero survived an injury-plagued year to stay with the Indians in left field. He played only 89 games, hitting .250 with 4 homers, and 50 RBIs, but is expected to see more action, possibly as a starter, since the Indians lost two of their starting outfielders, Kenny Lofton and Juan González. Moreover, the power hitter Cordero could be one solution to Cleveland's lack of power since González departed.

Position 8--Center Field: Carlos Beltran, Kansas City Royals

The 1999 Rookie of the Year had a slumping season in 2000, but returned strong in 2001. He batted .306, with 24 home runs, and 101 RBIs and is considered one of the best defensive outfielders in the league. He was a key player in the Bayamón Vaqueros championship season in the Puerto Rico Winter League and definitely a key player in the Royals' success in 2002.

Position 9--Right Field: Juan González, Cleveland Indians

González returns to the place he wants to be. He had played his career with Texas, where he won two Most Valuable Player awards in a span of three years. He seemed to be a little frustrated when he was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 2000. After an average season with the Tigers, where he hit .270, with 22 homers, and 70 RBIs, González went to Cleveland in 2001 and his numbers placed him fifth in voting for the Most Valuable Player. When the season was over, González had hit .325, with 35 home runs and 140 RBIs. In 2002, he's happy to be back where he wants to play. Expect a super season from Juan González.

Designated Hitter: Edgar Martínez, Seattle Mariners

Martínez wasn't supposed to play last season and seriously thought about retirement. However, convinced by players and manager Lou Piniella, he decided to play one more year. The result, Seattle tied a record for most wins during a season at 116. Martínez was indeed a solid contributor to that success, hitting .306, with 23 home runs, and 116 RBIs, and keeping his position as the American League's top designated hitter. He will play another season and, if he retires in 2002, expect him to be a Hall of Famer as baseball's best designated hitter.
