CARIBBEAN BUSINESSTwo Puerto Rico Hotels Make It To Conde Nast’s Top 10 ListThe Ritz-Carlton San Juan and Horned Dorset Primavera nabs spot in respective categoriesBY EVELYN GUADALUPE-FAJARDONovember 15, 2001 As a preferred tourism destination, Puerto Rico did not make the Top 10 tropical islands list of Conde Nast magazine’s 2001 Readers’ Choice Awards, which has already hit newsstands. But two local hotels did nab recognition in the Caribbean/Atlantic Resorts and Island Small Hotels categories. Bermuda, which finished eighth, was the only island in the Americas to interrupt the list of tropical destinations on the Pacific Rim, dominated by the Hawaiian Islands. According to the publication, the No. 1 tropical island is Maui, followed by Bali, Kauai, and Phuket in Thailand. The rest of the list includes Big Island, Fraser Island in Australia, Lanai, Oahu, and Bora Bora. Scores are based on ratings of various criteria such as scenery, people/friendliness, lodging, dining, activities/excursions, and coastline/beaches. Meanwhile, The Ritz-Carlton San Juan Hotel & Casino finished eighth in the Top 10 Caribbean/Atlantic Resorts list. The No. 1 Caribbean resort was the Four Seasons Hotel in Nevis, followed by the Malliouhana Hotel in Anguilla, and the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. The rest of the list includes the Ocean Club in Paradise Island, Bahamas; Grace Bay Club in Turks and Caico, the Ritz-Carlton in St. Thomas, Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda, Pink Beach Club in Bermuda and Grand Lido Negril in Jamaica. Scores are based on resort criteria for the quality of rooms, service, food/restaurants, location/layout, and activities/facilities. The only other local hotel that made in onto Conde Nast magazine’s Readers’ Choice poll was the Horned Dorset Primavera Hotel in Rincon. Puerto Rico’s quaint hotel finished eighth on the Top 10 list of island small hotels. The criteria used for rating hotels are for the quality of rooms, service, food/restaurants, and location. In related news, Puerto Rico’s Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort & Country Club ranked fourth on the top hotels list for food in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and The Bahamas by Travel & Leisure magazine’s readers’ poll for world’s best food.
