EAST

To the east of the city is the El Yunque rain forest, featuring 28,000 acres of exuberant flora and fauna. El Portal, the forest's gateway complex, is a one-of-a-kind venue for special events. Groups can combine a trip to El Yunque with a stop at nearby Luquillo Beach, one of the finest and largest on the Island.

On the east coast is Fajardo, the boating capital of Puerto Rico . Culebra and Vieques , two small islands nearby, are popular watersports centers and home to quaint restaurants, charming hotels and secluded white sand beaches.

WEST

To the west of San Juan is the Rio Camuy Cove Park, one of the largest cave systems in the Western Hemisphere. Guided tours include the world's largest underground river and a 400-foot sinkhole. On the Island's northern coast, the Arecibo Observatory is a huge radio-telescope whose 20-acre dish is built into a natural geologic feature. The Bioluminescent Bay, in La Parguera, on the southwest coast, features billions of aquatic microorganisms that lend a magical glow to the night. It is one of the Island's most popular attractions, and the starting point for nightly cruises.

On the southwest corner of the island is San German, known for its stately homes and the Porta Coeli, a 17th-century whitewashed chapel. Mayaguez is home to the University of Puerto Rico engineering and science campus as well as the botanical gardens. The island's third-largest city boasts an elegant central plaza with a bronze statue of Christopher Columbus.

SOUTH

On the south coast is Ponce, the second-largest city in Puerto Rico . Here you will find the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the brightly painted Parque de Bombas firehouse. Ponce also is home to the famed Museo de Arte de Ponce. A short drive away, the Hacienda Buena Vista, a restored coffee plantation, makes for a fun excursion.

THE SPORTING LIFE

Puerto Rico 's clear blue waters and year-round tropical climate make it a paradise for sports lovers:

* Fourteen championship golf courses in spectacular seaside settings

* More than 100 tennis courts; major hotels have pros on-site

* Some of the most stunning coral reefs in the Caribbean

* Many hotels offer organized dives including night dives and shipwreck exploration

* Puerto Rico 's mountainous terrain and dense rain forest are ideal for trailblazers

* Guided hikes and horseback rides, ending with lunch at a secluded beach

* Thoroughbred racing year-round at El Comandante race track

* Bithorn Stadium in the center of San Juan is the winter home of many major league baseball players

* Trophy fishing, including the International Billfish Tournament

* Numerous sailing and surfing competitions

DINING AND NIGHT LIFE

Visitors can choose from a range of award-winning restaurants serving Italian, Cuban, Chinese, Argentine, French, Spanish, Japanese, Romanian and, of course, Puerto Rican specialties.

After dinner, attendees will want to check out the international casinos, bistros and the trendy discotheques in Condado, Isla Verde and Old San Juan. Others can take advantage of the Island's vibrant arts scene, featuring dance, opera, drama, and all forms of music.

San Juan's Luis A. Ferre Centro de Bellas Artes, with three halls seating 2,000, 750 and 450, is the largest and best-equipped performing arts complex in the Caribbean. In addition to symphony concerts and the prestigious Casals Festival, the Center hosts operas, ballets, plays and popular music concerts. The University of Puerto Rico Theater showcases a variety of local and international acts. The historic Tapia Theater opened in 1830 in Old San Juan and hosts shows and various cultural events throughout the year.

Lounges in Old San Juan feature jazz or local favorites such as salsa and merengue. Hotel casinos offer slot machines, video poker, blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat and more.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND THEME PARTIES

With its colorful history and architectural wonders, Puerto Rico offers innumerable possibilities for unique themed events. Here are a few exciting and entertaining ideas the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau can help you plan:

Conquistadores Night Wander back 500 years to a Conquistadores celebration in the stunning San Geronimo colonial fortress overlooking the sea. Spanish flags, wooden barrels, sandbags and torches recreate the image of a real garrison guarding the entrance to Old San Juan. The event includes mounted Conquistadores in authentic 16th-century costumes, a buffet or cocktail party, as well as a fanfare of trumpets announcing arriving guests. Events are best scheduled for late afternoon or early evening, when fiery sunsets give way to the sparkling lights of metropolitan San Juan and the starry tropical sky. San Geronimo accommodates up to 500 guests. This event can also be recreated in a hotel ballroom or pool area.

Carnival Night Brazilian samba music intertwined with authentic Puerto Rican Bomba y Plena sets the stage. Confetti, costumes and colorful decor complete the festive atmosphere.

Puerto Rican Night Participate in a typical town Patron Saint's Festival. Set against a backdrop of folkloric music and dance featuring the famous Vejigantes and Cabezudos, this celebration also includes traditional island fare such as lechon asado (pork slowly pit-roasted). Make a salsa dance contest part of the fun. Winners receive Puerto Rican rum, coffee and candies.

El Yunque Rain Forest Hold your event in the only tropical rain forest within the U.S. National Forest System. Or, let us decorate any function room with tropical plants and flowers, exotic centerpieces, even a waterfall. Sounds of the rain forest and pre-Columbian music add to the ambiance. The menu features international gourmet fare and native cuisine.

Treasure Hunt Everybody wins! Teams start from three different locations and follow a printed guide with instructions to photograph certain sites with disposable cameras. At the end of the hunt, cameras are collected and presentation kits are made for each group.

Artist Showcase Party Everybody participates in this hands-on event. Guests test their abilities while professional artisans show them how to make santos (carved wooden saints), seashell jewelry or carnival masks. Nobody leaves empty-handed, but the most talented wins an original piece of artwork.

Horseback Safari Party A leisurely horseback ride takes participants through the countryside or along a deserted beach. Either way, there are plenty of photo opportunities. Upon return to the stables, the party begins. Enjoy well-deserved pina coladas, Puerto Rican cuisine and lively entertainment.
